For some reason, my instinct is to not believe what she says—although so far, she hasn’t come across as insincere at all. But why would she lie about a guest issue? Unless she really is bummed I’m leaving and can’t handle it. But that doesn’t seem like her either.

I take a few seconds to formulate my response.

Absolutely! Sorry to hear about the issue. Hopefully it’s resolved by now or will be soon.

This time, she texts back instantly.

Cocking my head to the side, I stare at her message. She put a heart. That’s not a bad thing, I guess.

I realize that just because we’ve fucked twice now doesn’t mean we have anything serious going on—depending on who you ask. I can’t deny that more of the former would be amazing, and the latter sounds enticing to me right now as well.

Guess I’ll see how next week goes and how I feel when I come back. And how she feels when I come back. Knowing my luck, she’ll fall for some hot granola man staying here while I’m gone and never care to see me again.

Chuckling to myself, I try to picture the type of “hot granola man” I’d imagine her falling for, and in my head, he looks like a mix of Fabio and a young Clint Eastwood.

I shake it off and try to focus on anything but Clara.

By the time I finally do see her at the fire, I’ve built it up so much in my head that I seem to have forgotten how to act. I know she’s laid-back and easy to be around, but my brain stalls as I try to come up with a string of words that makes sense. It helps that there are others around, which I’m grateful for. Eventually, I just feed off others’ comments and conversations, replying like I’m involved.

With surprise, I realize it’s only been a few days…what will it be like after I’m gone for a whole week?

Well, we’re about to find out.

As before, we are the last two sitting around the fire tonight—with the exception of another young woman who doesn’t seem to be reading the room. She keeps talking to Clara, who keeps glancing at me. Does she want me to rescue her somehow, or would she rather I go back to my suite so she can chat with this girl?

I decide to give the rescue a shot—just in case. The answer will become clear very quickly, I’m sure. “Well,” I say as I stand, stretching, “I think I’m gonna turn in. Are you ladies staying here a while longer?”

“I’m not ready to call it a night just yet,” the young lady says before Clara can reply. “So, anyway,” she continues, turning back to Clara, “after that, he started leaving me voicemails nonstop. I thought I might have to get a restraining order, but then he finally backed off. It’s so traumatic, you know? I’m getting therapy now because of him.”

Oh my.
